Design for a brewery, but that doesn’t really matter… like most light-industrial businesses, it just wants to be a warehouse, a shed. However, unlike most similar businesses, this building will also host guests (for tours and drinking).
So, the design becomes a decorative shed. wherein the walls themselves are ornamental, formed by a novel method of tilt-up construction (a building technology native to the site of san diego).
Rather than being form-cast in plywood, the concrete of the walls is cast into the earth, the formwork is carved from the site itself allowing for texture and decoration.
rchitecture intro studio (second semester) - UC Berkeley, 2017.
the walls are designed to notch together once tilted into place, joining one another in a series of monumental box joints.
